THE WAR IN UKRAINE IS A CONSEQUENCE OF MISPLACED TRUST

Believing in Russia's empty promises has proven disastrous for Europe.

December 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Budapest Memorandum between Ukraine, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and later France and China. In exchange for Ukraine's nuclear disarmament, the signatory countries guaranteed its sovereignty and security. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea and part of Donbas, and in 2022 began a full-scale invasion.

With its armed aggression, Russia unleashed the first continental war in Europe in the 21st century, undermining the system of collective global security established after World War II. The world is once again confronted with a regime that seeks to revise its borders by force and is heading towards a new totalitarianism.

The Budapest Memorandum is not only a guarantee to Ukraine, it was an agreement that gave guarantees to the whole world, and today it is under threat. The United States and the United Kingdom will not fight for Ukraine on their soil, but we must all demand that sanctions against Russia be brought to a sufficient level to make Russia get out of Crimea and Donbas. An example is the introduction of an embargo on the purchase of Russian oil and the export of Russian goods.

Since 2014, many world leaders and the media have emphasized that Russia's words do not match its actions, but unfortunately their words have not been heard. We do not want the world to remain deaf.

The Doomsday Clock, a project run by the American journal Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists since 1947, symbolizes humanity's proximity to global man-made catastrophe. The decision is made by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists science and security board, which includes 9 Nobel Laureates.

The world must tighten restrictions on the Russian Federation until it is unable to produce weapons and pose a threat.
